The Gairdner Global Health Award, recognizing contributions to health in the developing world, will be presented to Dr. Nicholas White, who works in the field of tropical medicine in Bangkok.
His research involved proving that artemisinin, a compound derived from a plant used in Chinese medicine, is a highly effective treatment for malaria.
White, who is a professor at Mahidol University Bangkok and Oxford University in the U.K., said the Gairdner prizes drive innovation and give recipients "the freedom to pursue exciting ideas that are right on the edge."
