The Global Fund to fight HIV/Aids, Tuberculosis and Malaria has given Uganda $24 million (about Shs49billion)to procure anti malarial drugs.
The money will be used to purchase drugs like Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) such as Coertem, Artemether and Quinine injections and Quinine tablets.
Yesterday, the Ministry of Health signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with two pharmaceutical companies, Ajanta Pharma and Abacus (Africa) Limited which will supply two of the anti-malarial drugs.
Mr Samuel Kyambadde, an undersecretary who signed the MoU on behalf of the Health Ministry, said the ministry has already contracted a third party procurement agent, Crown Agents, to oversee procurement processes of the drugs.
Accountability “This time around we shall be strict with handling of accountabilities because we don’t want the mistakes of the past to haunt this programme again. We are happy the funds have been put back and we hope we shall deliver to Ugandans the best health care services,” Mr Kyambadde said. The ministry has previously had problems of accountability and corruption allegations. In 2005, the Global Fund cut funds to the ministry after three ministers were accused of embezzling the money.
