TUBERCULOSIS: Washington State MDR

Health officials in Snohomish County said they are treating two people for drug-resistant tuberculosis.
Both patients are over 20-years-old and their cases are not related, said Health Officer for the Snohomish Health District Dr. Gary Goldbaum. One patient is from Snohomish County and the other person recently came to the area.
Both people are being isolated in their homes and nurses visit them twice a day, Goldbaum said. One person is still contagious, but the other is not.
The Everett City Council was told about the two cases Wednesday night, but the Health District said they’ve been handling these cases for weeks.
Drug resistant means they cannot be treated with the two-most common forms of TB drugs, but they are taking other medications and are expected to recover.
In the meantime, health officials said they are testing anyone who has come in contact with them.
Although no other cases have been confirmed, doctors tell us they would not be surprised if some of those tests do come back positive.
Goldbaum said he suspects both patients may have gotten TB from traveling; one patient was recently out of the country.
