TAMPA - Tuberculosis has infected a student at a third Hillsborough high school.
The student at Sickles High, 7950 Gunn Highway in northwest Hillsborough, is undergoing treatment for TB, a curable bacterial infection that often attacks the lungs. The student was diagnosed April 26 with an infectious case of the disease.
Investigators sent a letter home to Sickles parents and are contacting people who may have been in close contact with the student, said Hillsborough County Health Department spokesman Steve Huard.
Free TB skin tests will be given Monday at Sickles for about 270 students and staff who may have been directly exposed. People who had brief or passing contact with the student do not need testing.
This case is not connected to an investigation at Plant City High, where infectious TB was first found in November, Huard said. At that time, more than 200 students and staff who underwent tests; another 150 persons were tested last month. A total of 24 people at the school tested positive for non-infectious TB, Huard said.
