MALNUTRITION: Bangladesh

Among many other heatlh problems malnutrition is the most vivid one. The World Health Organization (WHO) observes that malnutrition is the major cause of death and debility in children here in the country. Micronutrient dificiency is very common where nearly 75 percent children live in illness mostly due to malnutriion related debility and infections. It is because of malnutrition or poor nutrition, deters physical, cognitive and mental development. Low birth weight and malnourished children are suscceptible to infections. Near about two-thirds of under-five deaths are attributed to malnutrition, 75 percent of it is associated with mild and moderate malnutrition. Again, about 25 percent of maternal deaths are associated with anemia and haemorrhage. Women and adolescent girls mostly suffer from anemia owing to iron dificiency which is also because of malnutrition. According to WHO, health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. Bangladesh has achieved significant declince in infant and child mortality over the past decade WHO certifies. Again, though the country gives a demean picture in nutrition issue, it presents a successful picture upon the control and prevention of diseases like measles, poliomyelitis and diptheria along with widespread use of ORS for diarrhoea which has greatly reduced childhood mortality and morbidity. Bangladesh is also on the verge of polio eradication and has already achieved the elimination goal for leprosy at the national level.
