POVERTY: Brazil: Women’s Equality Crucial to Ending Poverty

RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff said Tuesday in a message related to International Women’s Day that the end of gender discrimination is an “indispensable” step toward eradicating poverty. “In Brazil, poverty has a face – it is very feminine, it is woman’s. The poorer the family, the greater the chances it is headed by a woman,” the nation’s first female head of state said in a message posted on the presidential Web site.
Rousseff stressed that the “fundamental” goal of her presidency is to eradicate extreme poverty, and said that to do so, she believed that public policies must focus on women and children.
“On International Women’s Day, I wish to emphasize that ending gender discrimination and giving women and girls their true value are indispensable strategies for achieving success in our fight against poverty,” she said.
Rousseff repeated her commitment to the struggle against domestic violence and said that her government will “intensify and expand” the measures adopted by her predecessor Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva against men who abuse women and children.
She also used the occasion to note that she has just approved a 45.5-percent increase in subsidies for the poorest people in Brazilian society, with increases proportional to the number of children, a policy she judged “efficient” because “it privileges women.” EFE
