BISHKEK – At least 22% of deaths of Kyrgyz children under age 5 result from malnutrition, the UN said in a June 30 statement, quoting a just-released UNICEF-World Bank report.
Improper nutrition costs the Kyrgyz economy as much as US $32m (1.44 billion KGS) yearly, the study said. It recommended increased investment in nutrition, particularly in iodising salt and fortifying wheat flour with iron and B vitamins.
UNICEF is promoting exclusive breast-feeding for an infant’s first six months and an increase in young children’s vitamin and mineral intake.
