WESTBROOK, Maine — IDEXX announces the release of the IDEXX M. bovis Ab Test for sale outside the United States. Utilizing standardized ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay) methodology, this new laboratory-based test offers an additional measure to help control and eradicate bovine tuberculosis caused by Mycobacterium bovis. The IDEXX M. bovis Ab Test was validated with worldwide sample sets and included in over a dozen independent, worldwide evaluations.
“Bovine tuberculosis continues to be an economically devastating livestock disease in many countries,” said Olivier te Boekhorst, General Manager, IDEXX Livestock and Poultry Diagnostics. “Control and eradication is further complicated by the lack of sensitive tests as well as the presence of significant wildlife reservoirs. The IDEXX M. bovis Ab Test is a robust and reproducible tool to include in any comprehensive TB disease management program.”
The new M. bovis test offers a fast, three-hour protocol that delivers objective, quantitative results compatible with typical laboratory data management systems. Also, the easy to use ELISA format requires no specialized training or handling requirements, and can be automated for high-volume use. It can also be used with serum or plasma samples already collected for other disease surveillance purposes.
“Antibody detection is an easy and affordable method for TB testing, especially where there’s an emphasis on cost-effective detection and removal of infected cattle from problem herds in areas where the disease is endemic,” said John Lawrence, Senior Scientist, IDEXX Livestock and Poultry Diagnostics. “The test’s high specificity also makes it useful as a potential new surveillance tool in other regions.”
