Nov 24, 2011, T. Lam - Translated by Uyen Phuong
According to the Central Lung Hospital and World Health Organization, each year around 6,000 patients or 2.7 percent of the population in Vietnam suffers from multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis.
This was disclosed at a seminar on Tuesday jointly held by the Central Lung Hospital and the World Health Organization (WHO) in Ho Chi Minh City.
Vietnam aims to halve this number by 2015 and is working towards a goal to eradicate the disease by 2030.
This is the overall objective of Vietnam’s tuberculosis prevention program for the period 2011-2015 aimed at complete eradication by 2030.
Vietnam is 12th amongst 22 nations to have the highest number of tuberculosis patients. The country also ranks 14th among 27 nations to have so many multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis patients.
Annually the country registers 180,000 new cases and 32,000 tuberculosis fatalities, a serious burden on the country.
