BEIRUT: The new economic and social strategy adopted by the Lebanese government will improve the livelihood of 50 percent of people living under the poverty line in Lebanon by 2015 through the National Poverty Targeting Program (NPTP) said Social Affairs Minister Selim Sayegh .
“The Lebanese government allocated $100 million in the 2010 budget for the new social strategy and the of Social Affairs Ministry contributes to only 25 percent of this amount while the rest is offered by the private sector,” said Sayegh.
His remarks came during a news conference held at the headquarters of the Social Affairs Ministry in Badaro to discuss the objective of the NPTP and the steps that are to be taken during over the next few months.
The NPTP aims to establish a national targeting-system to be used by the government in the delivery of social transfers and services that improve the living standards of the population – in particular for the poorest and most vulnerable. Such transfers and services may include monetary social assistance, health insurance, energy and food subsidies and other programs that help households get out of poverty.
The NPTP, which is supported by the World Bank and the Italian Cooperation, was conceived in the aftermath of the July 2006 summer war, a time when Lebanon found itself in the face of severe economic and social difficulties.
Sayegh said that the new strategy is based on building 70 social development centers (SDC) where Lebanese citizens are invited to fill out applications if they are in need.
