TUBERCULOSIS: London, England

London has almost 40 per cent of all TB cases in the country and it is feared more people will become infected if the problem is not dealt with.

Mike Mandelbaum, chief executive of the charity TB Alert, said there are more cases of TB in the UK each year than there are of HIV, adding that London is one of the worst cities in western Europe for tackling the illness.

His comments came as scientists at the Health Protection Agency designed a new test to help identify TB cases within one hour. The standard test for TB can take up to eight weeks, so the research could lead to more rapid detection of the infection.

TB was thought to have been almost eradicated in Britain, but it has been on the rise for the past 20 years.
