UNITED NATIONS, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- A new World Health Organization (WHO) report on tuberculosis (TB) has indicated that governments must increase their efforts in order to combat the disease successfully, Farhan Haq, the UN spokesman, told reporters here Thursday.
"WHO says that the findings of the report confirm that, when WHO's best practices are put in place, and with the right amount of funding and commitments from governments, it is possible to turn the tide on the TB epidemic," Haq said at a daily news briefing.
According to Haq, WHO's report, titled Global Tuberculosis Control Report 2010, is its most comprehensive ever on the deadly disease. Not only does it use the most updated data available, but it also provides online profiles for 212 countries and territories.
Haq said that the report notes progress in fighting TB.
"Since 1995, more than 40 million people have been cured of tuberculosis and six million lives have been saved," he said.
However, the report also includes warnings that "these successes are far too fragile," he added, as two million people a year still die of tuberculosis.
TB is an airborne disease that is especially common in developing countries. People living with HIV/AIDS are particularly vulnerable to its effects.
