Today, Rear Admiral Timothy Ziemer, the U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator; U.S. Ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) James Entwistle; and USAID Mission director Stephen Haykin announced that the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) will join the DRC in the fight against malaria. In the DRC, nearly 69 million people live in areas where malaria is endemic and are afflicted by nearly 30 million cases of this preventable and treatable killer. PMI will expand malaria control efforts to large areas of the country, with the goal of achieving a 50 percent reduction in the terrible burden of malaria by targeting those most vulnerable to the disease – children under the age of 5 and pregnant women.
