Dec 6, 2010
Colombo: Sri Lanka Minister of Health Maithripala Sirisena said today in parliament that the government would appoint a presidential task force to eradicate malnutrition from the country.
The Minister expressed these views addressing the budget debate at the committee stage.
The Minister also said that the aim of the task force would be to eradicate malnutrition by 2011.
He pointed out that the Ministries of Education, Agricultural and Environment will join the Ministry of Health to take measures against malnutrition.
The Presidential Task Force that is appointed to eradicate dengue also will be directed to make the people aware of nutrition, the Minister said.
Data from a Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) by Sri Lanka's health ministry have revealed that child malnutrition is more than 50 percent in some areas of the East and North, with the national average at a record 29 percent.
The UNICEF attributes the malnutrition in children of Sri Lanka to a range of factors including disease, inadequate dietary intake, available food, and knowledge and cultural factors that influence the utilization of health services.
