TUBERCULOSIS: Incidence Remains High in Karas Region of Namibia

Luqman Cloete : 10 March 2011
The tuberculosis (TB) incidence remains high in the Karas Region, according to Karas governor Clinton Swartbooi.
There were 858 cases of all forms of TB reported in the region last year, Swartbooi said at the launch of a TB road show yesterday at Keetmanshoop.
"This indicates that although the actual number of cases seems small when compared to the population of Karas Region which is 78 873, we are indeed a region with the worst recorded TB rate," said Swartbooi.
He further indicated that 27 patients are being treated for multi-drug-resistant TB (MDR TB), adding that this "poses a threat to the community in the region".
A health official said TB deaths were less than three per cent in 2010 due to an increase in the TB cure rate.
According to the official, the 2010 TB statistics showed a decline compared to 2009, during which the region had topped the national TB incidence ranking
