County public health officials say an employee at a charter school in Chula Vista has been diagnosed with tuberculosis.
The employee worked at Robert L. Mueller Charter School from Jan. 5 to June 8. Students, staff and faculty who have been identified as being at risk have been notified and testing for those exposed will be held at the school on Tuesday, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.
People who may have been exposed are encouraged to go to the school for testing, said Dr. Dean Sidelinger, deputy county public health officer.
“TB is a treatable and curable disease,” he said.
Symptoms of an active case of tuberculosis include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss. Most people who are exposed do not develop tuberculosis because prolonged close contact with an individual with TB is required for it to be spread, health officials said.
The case is the 100th in the county so far this year; there were 229 cases of tuberculosis reported countywide in 2009, officials said.
