According to a global survey by the UN, the price of meat, dairy products and some cereals all rose last month.
With Africa’s slums growing at a rate exponentially faster than most countries, many residents in these areas cannot afford to buy the food needed to keep themselves healthy.
The survey also found that an estimated third of Kenyans living in urban areas are chronically malnourished.
Al Jazeera’s Peter Greste reports from Kibera slum in Kenya's capital Nairobi.
