It is interesting to note discussion at the recent Rwanda Malaria Forum on Elimination that even prior to reports of RTS,S in infants, participants concluded that it was really inappropriate at present to consider a malaria vaccine as part of the malaria elimination arsenal. It was viewed more as a mortality reduction tool in overall malaria control. Of course all points are moot until we can see how and if an effective vaccine will work in the field, where even regular EPI vaccines have trouble achieving coverage.
