ANTIPOLO CITY, Rizal, Oct 30 (PIA) -- The Package for the Improvement of Nutrition for Young Children (Pinoy) program held its culminating activity after the malnutrition reduction program reached its 120-day period.
The program was launched in Barangay Cupang in May the convergence of Antipolo City, Food and Nutrition Research Institute for the Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST) and 1-Sagip Partylist.
Present during the activity were Barangay City Social Welfare and Development Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Nadeia Sarte, Cupang Chairman Jing Reyes, City Health Officer Antonio Reillo, City Agriculture Office OIC Violeta Suarez and Executive Assistant for Social Services Menchie Leyble, who witnessed the culmination of the Pinoy Program to help 253 malnourished children from six to 35 months old.
“We are glad to see the results of our feeding program to reduce malnutrition together with Congressman Rodante Marcoleta of 1-Sagip Party List, together with our stakeholders. We are also constructing the Antipolo General Hospital to alleviate health problems and make the City of Antipolo progressive with the help of our citizens,” said Leyble.
FNRI-DOST held the program’s research component for 120 days with six months feeding from Monday to Friday where barangay nutrition scholars (BNS), barangay health workers (BHWs) and barangay volunteers assisted with the feeding complementary food blends and snack foods called “Bigmo,” which was derived from bigas (rice) and monggo (mung bean) developed by FNRI-DOST ( Bigmo Rice-Mongo Instant Blend and ready-to-cook Rice-Mongo-Sesame blend for infants 6 to 12 months old).
Bigmo Rice Mongo Curls were also fed to older children.
The ready-to-eat snack is rich in protein with 2.4 g per serving of 20 g and 9.4 g of energy per serving of 20 g.
Only one out of the 253 malnourished children failed to gain weight due to an illness while the rest have shown remarkable weight gain therefore achieving the normal weight for their age.
Congressman Rodante Marcoleta of 1-Sagip Party List also expressed his intent to fight malnutrition in the country.
As of now, there are 925 million out of seven billion people in the world experiencing hunger. This is why we are implementing programs to help stop malnutrition in children in our country. We would like to thank the parents of the children, different agencies and barangay ang local governments for their support for us to fight malnutrition,” said Marcoleta. (Antipolo PIO)
