The UCSF Global Health Group publishes malaria-eliminating country briefings

October 9, 2013

The Global Health Group's Malaria Elimination Initiative documents and disseminates progress and remaining challenges in the 34 malaria-eliminating countries, shedding light on the unprecedented success that has happened across the globe and the additional resources or solutions that will help successful elimination and thus shrink the malaria map.
An updated series of briefings on the 34 malaria-eliminating countries is now available. The briefings, updated in 2013, provide a comprehensive yet succinct overview of the history and current malaria situations in each of the 34 eliminating countries. The Malaria Elimination Initiative, in partnership with the Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Network (APMEN) and the national malaria programs of the eliminating countries, updated the 2012 country briefings with data from the 2012 WHO World Malaria Report as well as the latest peer-reviewed literature and other publicly available resources.
The briefings are designed to be used by researchers, policy makers, donors, malaria programs and implementers, as well as other stakeholders interested in malaria and elimination. Topics covered by these briefings include malaria and health financing indicators, progress towards malaria elimination, potential challenges to achieving and maintaining elimination, and innovative strategies each country has used or is currently using in their quest to eliminate malaria. The briefings include national transmission risk maps from the Malaria Atlas Project. The country briefings will continue to be updated over time to track progress toward elimination while continuing to highlight the challenges that countries will need to overcome as they move toward becoming malaria-free.

About the Country Briefings

The Global Health Group's Malaria Elimination Initiative produced a series of malaria-eliminating country briefings, many of which in partnership with the national malaria control programs of the malaria-eliminating countries and the World Health Organization. Malaria transmission risk maps were provided by the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP). Funding was provided through a grant to the Global Health Group from the Exxon Mobil Corporation. Additional support for the Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Network (APMEN) country briefings were provided by APMEN.
