Aceh province is expected to be free from malaria attacks by 2015, Head of the province`s health office, dr.Yani, said here Saturday.In order to achieve the target, health workers trained local residents to be the anti-malaria volunteers who would conduct public awareness campaigns, she said."The people`s active participation is needed to free Aceh from the malaria attacks. Therefore, the people must be aware of the importance of healthy neighborhood," Yani said.The efforts to enable Aceh to free itself from the malaria diseases got support from such international donors as Global Fund, she said. "The central, provincial and district governments work hand in hand with local and international non-governmental organizations to achieve this target," she said.Various parts of Aceh remained vulnerable to the malaria diseases, such as the districts of Pulau Aceh and Pulau Banyak, Sabang town and Simeulue regency, Yani said.According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Malaria in Indonesia is found in the outer islands of Papua, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Kalimantan, and Sumatra."It occurs with low frequency or is absent on the islands of Java and Bali where approximately 70 percent of the population live. All species of human malaria were found in Indonesia," WHO said.
