Harare — Zimbabwe is poised to achieve the 2010 Abuja Target of reducing malaria cases by half from 136 per 1 000 in 2000 to 68 per 1 000 by year end, a senior Government official has said.
The country presently has a case prevalence of 93 per 1 000.
Speaking at the handover of equipment and commodities worth US$772 O65 by the World Health Organisation in Harare last week, Health and Child Welfare Minister Dr Henry Madzorera said: "The equipment and commodities we are receiving here today will go a long way in strengthening our key strategy for malaria vector control."
The Abuja Target as agreed in 2000 was to halve by 2010, malaria prevalence from the 136 per 1 000 obtaining at the turn of the millennium.
WHO handed over two vehicles, malaria sundries, drugs, safety wear, computers, camping equipment and long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito nets.
