Fears are mounting in Ethiopia over the containment of multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB).Irin News has focused on the example of a sufferer in Addis Ababa to highlight the dangers. The individual is a bus driver in the city and has been receiving treatment for the disease at St Peter Tuberculosis Specialised Hospital for the last month.Doctors are concerned that the nature of his occupation may mean others have caught the condition.Diriba Agegnehu, TB/HIV programme officer for the United Nations World Health Organisation in Ethiopia, said: "Diagnosis and treatment of MDR-TB remains a challenge. So far we have only two centres in Addis Ababa that can do the culture and drug sensitivity testing required."Plus News recently reported that Ethiopia remains in poverty and is struggling with food shortages, which is a stark contrast to the mass construction programme that is currently taking place in Addis Ababa.
