POVERTY: Pakistan, Italy for poverty reduction through rural development

ISLAMABAD: Governments of Pakistan and Italy on Friday signed an agreement for poverty reduction through rural development activities in Balochistan, Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) for a soft loan of 40 million euros as part of Tokyo Pledges.
The major objectives of the loan have been identified as establishment of an effective and sustainable socio-productive infrastructure system and safety net mechanism. Improvement of access to micro-finance for the poorest in order to increase their capacity in developing income generating and productive activities. This programme focuses on poverty reduction through rural development income generation and safety net mechanism in the rural areas of Balochistan, KPK and bordering Afghanistan.
The major outputs are social network and community institutions strengthened; empowerment of the communities developed; social safety net established and developed; social and productive infrastructures created and functional; availability of social services and in particular in the sector of health and education increased; capacity of interaction with central government of institutions and with other development organisation and markets, improved.
On behalf of Italian government the Italian Ambassador to Pakistan HE Vincenzo Prati and on behalf of the government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Sibtain Fazal Halim, Secretary EAD signed the agreement.
The agreement between the Italian government and the government of Pakistan on the implementation of the programme for “poverty reduction through rural development activities in Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Federal Administered Tribal Areas and neighboring areas” has been signed today by the Italian Ambassador, HE Vincenzo Prati, and the Secretary of the Economic Affairs Division. The funds (40 million euros), pledged in the Tokyo Conference, will be invested through PPAF in poor rural areas. staff report
