In 2006, Jigna Rao was diagnosed with pelvic tuberculosis (TB) and was forced to give up on having the family she had always dreamed of with her husband.
Born in Mumba, India, Rao now lives in the U.S. and is an advocate for health related issues, particularly focusing on women’s health. She is actively involved in advocacy efforts to eliminate TB and speaks reguarly from a patient perspective at lectures and conferences attended by medical professionals.
Rao and RESULTS Stop TB Officer David Bryden visited three Congressional offices to educate staff about the importance of bold action on TB, and to urge members of the House to join the TB Elimination Caucus, formed last year.
They visited the offices of Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ), Rep. Rush Holt (D-NJ), Ms. Rao’s Representative, and Rep. Ed. Royce (R-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
In this video interview, Jigna describes her own battle with tuberculosis, why detection is a challenge in the U.S., and what inspires her to be a TB advocate.
