Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI) has said it is developing a new variety of rice highly enriched with zinc, one of the most abundant nutritionally essential elements in human body.
"Seeds of the new-variety rice would be made available to the farmers for cultivation by 2013," BRRI director general Mohammad Abdul Mannan told a workshop in the city on Wednesday.
BRRI and non-government development organisation BRAC organised the two-day workshop titled 'Zinc-enriched Rice to Prevent Malnutrition-caused Diseases in Bangladesh'.
Mannan said zinc is one of the most abundant trace elements in the human body. "Its inadequacy may cause a great damage to the body; especially when its children. Their physical growth reduces and they remain shorter in height."
"So, we've initiated efforts to develop high zinc-enriched rice."
He said the BRRI researchers were trying to develop the new-variety with supports from Harvest Plus, an international research organisation.
Speaking at the workshop, agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury said through the development of the new-variety rice, it would be possible to protect the new generation from zinc-caused malnutrition.
BRAC executive director Mahabub Hossain stressed on making the rice variety available to the farmers soon.
Bangladesh Agriculture Research Council (BARC) executive chairman Dr Wais Kabir and BRRI chief scientific officer Mohammad Alamgir Hossain also spoke at the workshop.
