MALNUTRITION: Somalia has the World’s Highest Rate of Malnutrition in Children

Apart from the conflict that has lasted more than 20 years, Somalia is now compounded with another problem due to drought and that is malnutrition in children. According to Grainne Moloniy of the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation, “one in four children is malnourished – that’s one of the highest rates in the world“. She also stated that many Somalis from the southern part are leaving rural areas to search for work in Somali towns due to drought as a result of shortage of rains. While others are migrating the horn of Africa to other nations such Yemen and Kenya. The drought has rendered the field dry and livestock keep on dying.
Ms. Moloniv claimed that the Somalis are now becoming more reliant on money from their relatives abroad. Unfortunately, the Somalis in the diaspora – like any other immigrant in the West – have also been hit by the now popular global economic crisis. Therefore, they have not been able to help their relatives like in the previous years when the economy was stable. To make matters worse, Ms. Moloniv said that the UN has only managed to raise a third of what it needs for food aid for Somalia while other humanitarian groups are also short of funds.
The drought is anticipated to have affected around two and half million Somalis and there is no sign of the calamity to end soon. Compounded with the continuing insecurity in most Somali regions, the situation is expected to worsen before things get better.
Therefore, before you put food in your mouth make sure you thank The One above for blessing you with the meal you are about to have. Also, I encourage those who can to donate to the poor to do so even if it seems little to you. Remember, what goes around comes around…your good deed will get rewarded!
